The cooler months are upon us now and I’ve been in the fitness industry for long enough to see women let go of all their healthy rituals, habits, routines, exercise, nutrition, motivation and care at this time of the year.

Then I watch them struggle for months to start again as we enter the summer period. This cycle plays out annually and they say to themselves ‘I just can’t seem to get anywhere!’ So they eventually stop caring, settle, give up, but battle an internal struggle of dissatisfaction and unhappiness towards themselves, their confidence and their bodies.

Then I see other women, including myself, do nothing extraordinary, except instil the simple discipline of consistency!

No matter what the season, their motivation levels, their excuses, what’s going on in their lives….they simply turn up! They keep turning up!

๐ˆ ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐œ๐ก๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ. ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐š ๐๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ฌ ๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐›๐ž๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ก๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ฐ๐ž’๐ซ๐ž ๐ข๐ง.

I used to hate winter. I hated the colder shorter days, the waking up in the dark, the longer time to dry the clothes, the more time indoors, the closed house, the no swimming, no salads, the layers of clothing, the winter clothes. I still kept turning up and moving my body no matter what, but I couldn’t wait for winter to end.

๐“๐ก๐ž๐ง ๐ˆ ๐ฆ๐š๐๐ž ๐š ๐๐ž๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐œ๐ก๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐จ ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ. ๐ˆ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐ˆ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐ž๐ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ž. 

  • Instead of sunrise walks some mornings I would walk later and enjoy the sun on my skin
  • I switched some of my practices to more introspective yoga classes in the studio warmth under the heaters
  • I embraced more cleansing soups and hearty warm veggie salads and porridges
  • I cook bigger batches for leftovers and use the slow cooker to save time
  • I would have dinner earlier to still have family time or downtime and get to bed earlier for more hibernating sleep
  • I get my clothes out night before, set the heater to come on an hour earlier so I wake up to a warm room, put my alarm out of reach so I have to physically get out of bed and put my Peter Alexander fluffy dressing gown and ugg boots by my bed ready to slip straight into. My bathroom heater is set too so it’s toasty (advantage of having a hubby in commercial air con!)
  • I put my car heater and seat heater on in the garage warming up at 4:20am while I’m making my warm lemon drink……it’s all about setting yourself up so you don’t dread the early mornings!
  • I decided I didn’t have to say yes to everything and enjoy more time at home under the blankets with movies, family time, writing or a book 
  • We switched the swimming pool for fire pit with the family and friends
  • I changed meditation outside in my zen zone to the warmth of inside or to later in the day on a blanket under the suns rays
  • I enjoyed more weekend sleep ins with my hubby or early nights with a book 
  • I decided to retreat inwardly and reflect on what changes need to be made in preparation for the creative energy of spring and taking inspired action, inspired from my winter introspection

I recognised humans are cyclical beings and embraced what’s innately programmed into our ancestral wisdom! We need to honour our intuitive instincts to slow down and hibernate over the cooler months rather than listen to our ego’s which make us feel we have to be constantly going, doing and pushing like everyone else. No more! I’m living in alignment with my cycles as best as I can. Life will flow more effortlessly for me when I allow and flow rather than force and resist.

I still move my body, still walk, still eat clean, still do my inner work, still do all my rituals, still have fun. I just shift my perspective to embracing what the seasons have to offer and adapt my routine to suit what my body and soul needs right now!

My ideal self takes care of herself regardless! She loves on her body. She nourishes herself on every level. She carves out time for health, fitness and spiritual practices. She priorities her body, mind, soul health and wellness because it’s one of her core values. She’s self motivated and takes responsibility for her results. She rests to create and allows herself time to slow down guilt free. She’s bursting with energy and loves life. She manifests her desires and has an attitude of expectancy. She shows up as her best self for her and her loved ones and leads by example.

It’s just who she is! It’s inbuilt in me and will be until the day I die. I adapt, I grow, I make changes because that’s the nature of life. Nothing remains the same, we are forever evolving, changing and growing. We simply need to adapt with life’s many seasons and shift our perspective, all while holding onto our values, our vision and our desires.
